What’s in the Hooked on Paint additive?

Hooked on Paint uses a proprietary blend of fine iron powders that mix evenly with paint primer. Once applied, it creates a ferrous (not magnetic) surface that allows magnets to stick to your wall safely and cleanly.

Does the additive expire or go bad over time?

The additive won’t expire right away, but once it’s opened, it will begin to rust if exposed to air or humidity. For best results, use it within one year if sealed, and as soon as possible once opened. If you see signs of clumping or discoloration, do not mix it with primer and paint. You will need to order new additive.

How should I store unopened additive?

Store unopened additive sealed and in a cool, dry place. Avoid moisture, if the powder is exposed to humidity or air for too long, it can start to rust or clump.

If you’ve already opened a container but don’t plan to use it soon, make sure it’s tightly resealed and stored indoors away from any dampness.

Can I wash this paint down the drain?

No. Just like regular paint, the Hooked on Paint mixture should not be rinsed down the drain. The iron powder can settle in your pipes and clog them. Dispose of leftover paint properly according to your local paint disposal guidelines.

Do I need to follow any special paint safety rules?

No special rules here! Treat it just like regular paint; don’t eat it, don’t drink it, and don’t dump it down the drain. Otherwise, normal painting safety applies.

Are there any negative health effects?

Once applied to the wall, there are no health risks. Even in powder form, the additive is considered very low-hazard. Just use common sense:

  • Don’t ingest it.

  • Avoid breathing in the dry powder, wear a dust mask if needed.

  • If it gets in your eyes, rinse with water.

  • If a large amount is accidentally swallowed, seek medical attention.

  • Rinse with soap and water to remove it from skin

Is having a ferrous/magnetic wall dangerous in any way? What if I have a pacemaker?

Not at all! The wall itself isn’t magnetic; it’s ferrous, meaning magnets are attracted to it, but it doesn’t generate a magnetic field. So, if you have a pacemaker or other medical device, there’s no cause for concern.

Is the Hooked on Paint additive safe to use indoors?

Yes! Hooked on Paint is designed specifically for indoor use. It performs best in climate-controlled spaces such as homes, offices, or studios.

Lead and Iron aren’t the same thing, right?

Correct! They’re completely different! Lead is toxic to humans, while iron is actually essential for the body. You consume iron every day through foods and supplements. So having a little iron in your wall is perfectly safe for people and pets. (We can’t promise any health benefits, but we’re sure it won’t hurt!)

The wall feels rough or bumpy, how can I fix that?

That’s normal! The iron in the additive gives the wall a slightly textured feel and depending on your primer and topcoat it can be noticeable or not. If it’s rougher than you’d like, lightly sand the surface, then apply your topcoat for a smooth finish.

I added too much or too little additive, can I fix it?

If you added too little additive to your primer and already mixed it, keep painting with what you have to avoid waste. Once you’ve used it all, order more additive and apply additional coats to strengthen the wall.

If you realize you ordered too little additive before mixing, go ahead and order more before you start painting.

If you added too much additive, you can fix it by slowly adding more primer until the texture feels right again. The standard ratio is 1 package of additive per 1 quart of primer. Adding too much isn’t a big problem, it just makes the paint thicker and a little harder to apply.

What happens if I only apply two coats?

Two coats won’t be enough for a strong magnetic hold. The wall will work, but it’ll feel weak, and you won’t get the full strength we advertise. The more coats you apply, the stronger your wall will be. For best performance, apply all of the primer mixture (usually 3–4 coats). If you want a stronger wall then advertised continue applying primer mixture to the wall.

If I have extra paint, where should I use it?

If you have enough for another full coat, go ahead and apply it: it’ll only make your wall stronger. If you just have a little left, use it in areas where you plan to hang the most items or need extra holding power.

You don’t save it, use all the paint! Why?

You’ll want to use every drop of your mixed primer! The more iron that’s on your wall, the stronger your magnets will hold.

Once the additive is mixed in, the paint can’t be stored for long, so make sure it all goes on the wall within 24 hours.

Magnetic Strength & Performance

Magnetic Strength & Performance

Magnetic Strength & Performance

My magnets hold in some spots but not others, why?

This usually happens when the primer mixture wasn’t remixed before each coat or when the paint was applied unevenly. The iron can settle at the bottom of your tray or bucket, which causes some sections of the wall to end up stronger than others.

To find the weaker areas, take one of our magnets (or attach it to the frame or item you plan to hang) and slowly move it around the wall. You’ll be able to feel which spots have a stronger or weaker pull.

When applying your final coat of primer mix, make sure to focus a little extra paint on the weaker spots. Adding more primer to those areas helps even out the strength and creates a more uniform magnetic surface across the whole wall.

Why do your magnets feel stronger than normal ones?

Our magnets are designed with specialized magnetic patterns that “hook” into the ferrous wall for a stronger hold. This design increases the holding force of the magnet. Our magnets are also wrapped with protective film, which helps protect the wall and the magnet, and also increases the shear force.

How much weight can a magnet hold on a Hooked on Paint wall?

It depends, if you are not using one of our magnets, then you will not be able to hold much of anything. If your using one of our Hooked on Paint magnets and painted your wall according to our instructions, then you should get the values below:

  • 1x1 Permanent Mount: 2.5 lbs.

  • 1x2 Permanent Mount: 5 lbs.

  • 1x1 Peel & Stick Mount: 2 lbs.

If you painted your wall with less coats of our additive then your values will be lower than this, but if you painted more coats, you will see greater hold forces.

My magnets don’t seem to stick very well, what did I do wrong?

Most of the time, weak magnet strength comes from:

  • Too few primer coats with our additive

  • Paint that wasn’t remixed between layers

  • Paint that was not evenly coated

  • A thick or highly textured topcoat

If you have not painted a top coat yet order some more additive and put more primer coats on the wall. If you have already painted your top coat then either use more magnets for it to hold or sadly you might need to paint more primer coats over that top coat. If you want to consult us, please reach out to us from our contact page.

How long does the magnetic strength last?

The magnetic strength lasts indefinitely! As long as the wall stays dry and the surface isn’t damaged, it will hold magnets for years without losing strength. The iron in the wall doesn’t wear out or lose its ferrous properties over time.

Timing & Drying

How soon after painting can I start decorating?

Once your topcoat is completely dry, you’re ready to go!

Follow the dry time listed on your paint can; if you’re unsure, waiting 24 hours is a safe bet before hanging or attaching anything to your wall.

What if I notice rust or discoloration later on?

If you ever notice rust, don’t worry! Just lightly sand the affected area, wipe dust with a damp rag, let it dry completely, and apply a fresh coat of your topcoat paint. This will seal the surface again and prevent the rust from returning.

How do I clean or wipe down a Hooked on Paint wall?

To clean your wall, use a slightly damp rag, then immediately dry the area with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid soaking the wall or using abrasive cleaners, water sitting on the surface could lead to rust beneath the paint over time.

Can I repaint or change the color later?

Absolutely. You can repaint your Hooked on Paint wall any time.
Just keep in mind that every extra layer of paint adds thickness, which can slightly reduce magnetic hold. If you’re changing colors, try to use a thin topcoat and avoid heavy texture paints to keep your magnet strength consistent.
